Volkswagen Steals Toyota's Crown as World's Largest Automaker

The U.K.’s Guardian explains, "Volkswagen-Porsche has overtaken Toyota to become the world's largest car manufacturer as the German group benefits from state-backed stimulus packages around the globe." VW has "produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, outstripping its Japanese rival which has seen four million cars roll off production lines since January."

Sad: 'Slumdog' child star's Mumbai shanty home torn down

MUMBAI - City authorities in Mumbai demolished the shanty home of a "Slumdog Millionaire" child star on Thursday, forcing his family into the streets months after the Oscar-winning film shot him to global fame.

Azharuddin Ismail, 9, played the character of Salim as a child in the film, a rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.

Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home in a teeming slum was one of several shanties, illegally built along a drain, that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai, India's financial capital and entertainment hub.

Singing Scottish Susan and from Wales, Shaheen -Britain Got Talent 2009

LONDON (AFP) - - A 47-year-old Scottish charity volunteer has become an unlikely international media sensation after a stunning talent show performance, amid reports she is set to cash in with a quick record deal.
By Thursday, a video clip of Susan Boyle's singing debut on the "Britain's Got Talent" television show last weekend had been viewed by over 12 million people on YouTube, with the numbers rising fast.
US actress Demi Moore was apparently moved to tears by the clip, while the story has been picked up around the world, with US, Australian and other broadcasters reportedly queuing up for interviews.
"Susan has clearly wowed the audience, the judges and the world with a truly fantastic performance," said Tom Kerr, leader of West Lothian council in Scotland where Boyle lives alone with a cat called Pebbles.
The West Lothian Courier, her local paper, added that she was "doing what the Beatles did in the 60s" -- that is, taking the United States by storm, as the Fab Four did four decades ago.
And, while press coverage in Britain was relatively muted, media in the United States are lapping up the story.
Global news channel CNN said it had been flooded with messages about Boyle, who was filmed tucking into a sandwich shortly before taking to the stage.
The San Francisco Chronicle, under the headline "Just Who Is The Singer Susan Boyle?" noted that "Unless you live under a rock, you know about the Scottish woman who has taken the industrialised world by storm."
"UK talent show stunned by Scottish virgin Susan Boyle," ran Australia's Herald Sun newspaper.
In Britain coverage was less high profile -- perhaps because "Britain's Got Talent" airs on private broadcaster ITV and so the story is not highlighted by rival channels.
In the clip, the unglamorous-looking Boyle drew laughter from the audience when she walked on stage, saying she dreamed of emulating West End star Elaine Page.
When she began to sing, however, the panel of three judges led by music guru Simon Cowell was visibly shocked, and the audience in Glasgow rose to its feet, as her voiced soared through "I Dreamed A Dream" from "Les Miserables."
Cowell is already lining up a record deal for her, Britain's Press Association reported, while versions of the Les Miserables song she sang entered the midweek singles chart here and the iTunes chart.
US actress Moore posted the comment "It made me teary" on her Twitter page, after viewing the clip.
Boyle's success -- she is now favourite to win the British talent show -- has drawn comparisons with Paul Potts, an opera-singing mobile phone salesman who won in 2007. Potts went on to have number one albums in 15 countries.
Perhaps inevitably, the story -- in which comment on Boyle's appearance has been prominent -- triggered media soul-searching.
"Is Susan Boyle ugly? Or are we?" wrote Tanya Gold in Britain's Guardian newspaper.
"On Saturday night she stood on the stage... small and rather chubby, with a squashed face, unruly teeth and unkempt hair.
"Why are we so shocked when 'ugly' women can do things, rather than sitting at home weeping and wishing they were somebody else?
"Men are allowed to be ugly and talented," she wrote, saying businessman Alan Sugar -- who stars in reality TV show "The Apprentice" -- looks "like a burst bag of flour," while chef "Gordon Ramsay has a dried-up riverbed for a face."

Electric cars are cheaper and faster than Whore or any hybrid on the market

The all-electric automobile is not a new idea: in 1900, a quarter of the cars produced in the United States ran on batteries alone. But when Henry Ford debuted his cheap, gas-powered Model T in 1908, oil quickly became the industry standard. Shai Agassi, 40, a former president at software giant SAP, thinks the electric car deserves to be salvaged from history's dustbin. With his new venture, Better Place, he plans to jump-start the fledgling electric-auto industry by building an entire infrastructure—cars, recharge stations and more—from scratch. Governments in Israel, Denmark, northern California and elsewhere have signed on. NEWSWEEK'S Fareed Zakaria spoke to him about the company. Excerpts:
ZAKARIA: What's the idea of Better Place? AGASSI: We looked at the problem of transport from a very different perspective than the automotive sector has in the past. They've all looked at it from the perspective of how to build the car. We looked at it from the perspective of how to run an entire country without oil. You've got to put the infrastructure ahead of the cars. In our case, the infrastructure is a combination of a massive amount of charge spots and the ability to switch batteries in less time than it takes you to fill up with gasoline.
But by building the infrastructure before you have electric cars on the road, aren't you putting the cart before the horse?We wouldn't build the infrastructure if we didn't have a massive carmaker to build cars. Renault-Nissan is the first to build the cars for this infrastructure, and we've coordinated so our infrastructure will be in place when their cars hit the market.

How else have you altered the old transportation model?The second [change we decided on] is that the car and the battery, ownershipwise, have to be separated.
Why is that?You never want to be the guy who bought the previous [year's] battery. We say, you never buy the battery. What you buy is the car. The third change is in the business model. You buy the commute by miles, and commute miles include the battery, the electricity, access to the network and battery-switching. You [sign up for] a contract on a per-mile basis, and you get a rebate based on the length of your contract. That makes the electric car cheaper to acquire than the gasoline counterpart.
Does government have any role in this?Our model is not predicated on government subsidies. What governments can do is they can accelerate adoption. Every government creates a different policy. Israel, our first site, created a tax differential of 60 percent between buying a gasoline car and an electric car. Denmark went up to a 180 percent difference—180 percent tax on gas engines, zero tax on electric.

This all sounds very complicated. What's the status report from Israel and Denmark?Our goal for Israel and Denmark is mass-market access by 2011. In 2010, we have a systems-wide test where we have about 100,000 [recharge] spots already installed, a few thousand cars, a few switch stations already in location, the software's already in place, people are driving on customer contracts and are paying. In 2009, we have a smaller systems test with about 50 cars going around Israel and about 50 cars going around Denmark.

Urgent: Email on Tsunami Warning in Asia on July 22 - Malaysia News

SINGAPORE: An email is going around warning about an impending earthquake and tsunami hitting parts of Asia, including Singapore. It claims that disaster will strike on July 22, the same day as a solar eclipse.
The email says that apart from Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, the giant wave may also hit countries as far as Japan, Australia and India.
But the credibility of the email is questionable. For one, it is riddled with spelling errors, and two, it does not cite any credible source.
While it is true that a solar eclipse will occur on July 22, experts said there is no connection between an eclipse and an earthquake.
Professor Kerry Sieh, director, Earth Observatory of Singapore, said: "In the last 110 years or so, there have been about 85 really big earthquakes — 8 (on the Richter magnitude scale) or greater. And only two of those occurred on the same day as an eclipse. And even those were a partial eclipse, not a total eclipse. They happened in a different place from where the eclipse happened."

Strong Quake Jolts Indonesia

Jakarta: An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale Saturday jolted the eastern part of Indonesia, the meteorology and disaster management agencies said.
The quake occurred at 0541 GMT, with the epicentre 117 km northeast of North Sulawesi and 10 km under the seabed, an official said. No tsunami warning was issued.
"There is no report of damage or fatality. The people only felt a light shake," Panji Syahril Maulana of the disaster management agency said.
Indonesia with over 230 million people sits on a vulnerable quake zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the two continental plates meet, which cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.

New Delhi: In a stinging indictment of Varun Gandhi Sunday night, the Election Commission held him guilty of breaching the model code of conduct and said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee for Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh did not deserve to be a candidate. It asked the party not to field him in the upcoming polls.
A late evening official communique said: "In the considered opinion of the (Election) Commission, the respondent (Varun) does not deserve to be a candidate in the present general elections."

The Election Commission said: "The two speeches (by Varun Gandhi) contained highly derogatory references and seriously provocative language of a wholly unacceptable nature against a certain community."
Not sparing the BJP, the order stated: "Any sponsorship of his candidature by the BJP, or any other political party, at this election would be perceived as endorsing his unpardonable acts of inciting violence and creating feelings of enmity and hatred between different classes of citizens of India, destroying the social, democratic and plural fabric of the country."

Josef Fritzl, the Austrian accused of imprisoning his daughter and fathering seven children with her, stunned his court trial on Wednesday by changing his plea to guilty on all charges.
The retired Austrian engineer said he decided to admit the previously denied charges of murder and slavery after seeing his daughter Elisabeth describe her quarter century of sexual abuse in a dark, damp cellar.
Although Fritzl could yet avoid a life sentence, a psychiatrist told the court that the 73-year-old should be placed in a psychiatric facility as he regarded himself as having been "born to rape".
The defendant, who had tried to hide from photographers and TV cameras earlier this week, made a tearful confession, saying: "I plead guilty to the crimes I've been charged with. I'm sorry."
Media reports that Elisabeth had been smuggled into court the day before and speculation that a face-to-face confrontation with her may have triggered Fritzl's U-turn were fuelled by his own lawyer.
"If some of the victims were present (in court) yesterday, that certainly must have had a strong trigger effect," said Rudolf Mayer .
A court spokesman would not confirm Elisabeth's presence at the closed-door session on Tuesday.
The retired electrical engineer had pleaded guilty to incest, rape and sequestration on Monday but initially denied enslavement and murder, for which he faces a life prison term.
Under Austrian law, the final sentence is softened in the event of a confession.
Despite Fritzl's guilty pleas, the jury will nevertheless have to decide whether to convict him and on what charges. A verdict is expected Thursday.
Asked by the judge what caused him to change his plea, Fritzl replied: "My daughter's videotaped testimony."
Fritzl had to watch Elisabeth's testimony on Monday and Tuesday and was questioned about his treatment of her.
Elisabeth Fritzl, now 42, and her children have sought refuge in a specialist clinic during the trial to avoid publicity. Authorities are attempting to give them a new start in life under a new identity.
Prosecutors have accused Fritzl of murder for letting a baby named Michael die shortly after birth in the cellar. Fritzl had maintained the baby was still-born and said he burnt the body in a boiler.
But he admitted Wednesday that he was present at Michael's birth and that he had developed breathing problems.
"I don't know why I didn't help," he told the court. "I should have noticed that the baby was not doing well. I just hoped it would survive."
A psychiatrist told the court that Fritzl felt he was "born to rape," and said he should be placed in a psychiatric facility because there was a risk he would commit new offences.
"The danger is still very much there that he will reoffend if he is not treated," said Adelheid Kastner.
"It is necessary that he continue being treated until he can no longer be classified as dangerous."
When Kastner quizzed Fritzl as to why he had chosen Elisabeth, the third-eldest of his seven legitimate children, as his victim, "his reply was that she was most like me. She was as stubborn as me, as strong as me. The stronger your opponent, the bigger the victory," she quoted him as saying.
Three children were brought up to live with Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie while three lived with Elisabeth and never left the dungeon until their release last April.
The trial was adjourned so the three judges could compile a catalogue of questions to help the jury decide whether Fritzl was guilty as charged.
The questions would be read to the jury Thursday, after which defence and prosecution would make their closing statements.
The jury would then retire to reach its verdict, which need not be unanimous, but requires a simply majority.
Once the verdict has been reached, the jury and judges would together consider what sentence to hand down.
They could decide to send Fritzl to a mental facility, court spokesman Cutka told journalists.
Experts and judges would then review Fritzl's case on a yearly basis.
"If the expertise concludes there has been an improvement and he can be released from such a facility, he will then serve any remainder of his sentence (in a prison)," Cutka said.

Yesterday Israeli forces killed four sisters and a four year old boy. Over 40 children have been killed since Saturday.

1. Travolta says he's heartbroken at son Jett's death
FREEPORT, Bahamas - John Travolta said Saturday he and his wife Kelly Preston are "heartbroken" over the death of their chronically ill 16-year-old son, who collapsed at the family's vacation home on Grand Bahama.
Police Superintendent Basil Rahming has said a caretaker found Jett Travolta unconscious in a bathroom late Friday morning and he was later pronounced dead at a Freeport hospital. The youth was last seen entering the bathroom on Thursday, according to Rahming's police statement.
"We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time we had with him for the rest of our lives," Travolta and Preston said in their first public statement since Jett's death. They also thanked people for their support.
"Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered," said a statement posted Sunday on Travolta's Web site. "We will cherish the time we had with him for the rest of our lives."
Preston and Travolta have said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki Syndrome, an illness that leads to inflamed blood vessels in young children. Preston blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health, according to People magazine. Others said Jett was prone to seizures.
Michael McDermott, an attorney for the actor, said Sunday that although Jett was last seen Thursday and found the following day, he doesn't believe that the teen was in the bathroom for a substantial amount of time.
"The police left the impression that the boy was unsupervised. No. There were two nannies with him for the entire evening," McDermott told The Associated Press. "They made it seem like he was sent to the condo and nobody checked in on him until the next morning."
"(Jett) was spectacularly supervised," said McDermott, who said he has not had the chance to talk to the two nannies himself.
McDermott said he had no knowledge of Jett's medical history but "understood he had a history of seizures." It is unclear whether Jett was taking medication for that.
The Bahamas' health minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, has said that a second, U.S.-certified pathologist will fly in at dawn Monday to assist with the teenager's autopsy.
"I have spoken to (Travolta) and informed him that the government is doing everything it can," Minnis said Sunday, adding he could not disclose further specifics about the autopsy.
About a dozen security guards and Bahamian police officers patrolled Sunday around the luxury Old Bahama Bay resort community where Travolta and Preston remained inside their home. The white-sand beach in front of the suites was closed.
The couple also has an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu.
Travolta, 54, is trying to finish funeral arrangements and hopes to fly his son's body to Florida by midweek, McDermott said. Travolta and Preston, 46, have a house in Ocala, Florida.
The Church of Scientology, established in 1945 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, has attracted numerous celebrity followers, and among its more famed members is Travolta, who has long been one of Hollywood's biggest names.

NASSAU (Reuters) - Actor John Travolta broke a two-day silence over the death of his 16-year-old son Jett on Sunday, saying he and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, were "heartbroken" by their sudden loss.
Jett, who had a history of seizures, was found unconscious in a bathroom at his family's home at the Old Bahama Bay resort on Grand Bahama Island on Friday morning.
He was pronounced dead after being taken by ambulance to Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport and an autopsy to determine the cause of death is due to be performed in the Bahamas on Monday.

The statement did not refer to Jett's medical history or possible cause of death. But Travolta's lawyers, Michael Ossi and Michael McDermott, were quoted on Sunday as saying Jett apparently suffered from grand mal, a type of epilepsy marked by convulsions and loss of consciousness.
He was on an anti-seizure medication called Depakote for several years, Ossi and McDermott told the celebrity website TMZ.
They said the drug was suspended after it lost its effectiveness amid concern about side effects, however, and Jett had been suffering about one extremely serious seizure a week.
Travolta and his wife have said previously that Jett became very sick when he was a toddler and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, which leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in young children.
Ossi and McDermott did not immediately return calls from Reuters on Sunday seeking comment. Travolta's publicists have declined to comment on autopsy or funeral plans for the actor's teenage son.

Autopsy planned in death of John Travolta's son

NASSAU, Bahamas - An autopsy is planned for John Travolta's teenage son, who died after apparently hitting his head on the bathtub while the family was vacationing at their home in the Bahamas, authorities said.
Jett Travolta, 16, had last been seen entering the bathroom on Thursday and had a history of seizures, Police Superintendent Basil Rahming said in a statement.
A house caretaker found the teenager unconscious in a bathroom late Friday morning. He was taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the statement said.
Jett apparently hit his head on the bathtub, said a police officer who declined to be named because she was not authorized to speak on the matter.
Family attorney Michael Ossi said in a statement that Jett died suddenly on Friday. Publicists Samantha Mast and Paul Bloch released the statement but could not be reached for additional comment.
Obie Wilchcombe, a parliament member and former tourism minister in the Bahamas, said that an autopsy is planned for Monday, and "we expect a quick resolution."
"John spoke with the minister of health and the doctors and police are at the hospital. They're very, very quick to resolve things," he said.
Wilchcombe said Travolta "spent a tremendous amount of time with Jett."
"He always brought him along. There was a close affectionate relationship and lots of love," Wilchcombe told "Larry King Live" in a live telephone interview. "People in the old Bahama community today are in shock."
Travolta, 54, and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, 46, also have an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu. The family had arrived in the Bahamas on a private plane Tuesday and was vacationing at their home in the Old Bahama Bay resort community.
Preston and Travolta have said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in young children. She blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health, according to People magazine. Both Travolta and Preston are practicing Scientologists.
"I was obsessive about his space being cleaned. We constantly had the carpets cleaned," Travolta said in a 2001 interview with CNN's Larry King, a portion of which was rebroadcast on the "Larry King Live" show Friday night. During that interview, when Jett was 9, Travolta spoke of how his son nearly died when he was 2.
It is unclear whether Jett was taking any medications for his seizures.
The Scientology Celebrity Center in Los Angeles declined to comment.
A spokeswoman for Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport said she could not release any information because of privacy concerns.
Travolta's corporate and commercial attorney, Michael McDermott, said the actor had a very strong relationship with his son.
"There was unspoken communication between the two. ... It's just so hard," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Kelly is very quiet and both are grieving."
McDermott said his family and other friends are with the couple in the Bahamas. The group came for a two-day New Year's celebration and had planned to return to Florida on Sunday.
"We're are all here and trying to help in any way we can," McDermott said. "Their pain is so evident."
Travolta, who gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino on the 1970s television show "Welcome Back, Kotter" and the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever," went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest names. He married Preston in 1991.

Thai protesters lift airport siege, flight lands

BANGKOK - Anti-government protesters lifted their crippling, eight-day blockade of Thailand's main airport on Wednesday, raising the hopes of 230,000 stranded tourists even though there is no end in sight to the wider political crisis.

The central bank slashed interest rates by a shock 100 basis points to 2.75 percent, reflecting the impact of the siege on a tourism- and export-dependent economy already feeling the effects of global slowdown.
A Thai Airways domestic flight landed at 0715 GMT and several international flights were scheduled to leave soon after, although it was unclear when full operations would resume.
Still cheering Tuesday's sacking of the government by the courts, thousands of yellow-shirted People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activists made way for an army of cleaners at the $4 billion Suvarnabhumi terminal, one of the world's biggest.
"I have strong confidence that everything will be OK and will be back to normal in two days," airport general manager Serirat Prasutanond told Reuters as PAD officials swept up debris left by their sit-in, the latest stunt in a six-month campaign.
Serirat said on Tuesday security sweeps and computer system checks would keep the airport closed until Dec. 15.
Whatever the final opening date, Thailand looks set to remain politically riven and chaotic for much longer.
Dissolution of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) will heal none of the basic rifts between Bangkok's royalist elite and middle classes, who despise ousted and exiled leader Thaksin Shinawatra, and the urban poor and rural masses who love him and continue to vote his allies into office.
"Thailand remains locked in this structurally flawed system for the foreseeable future," said IHS Global Insight analyst Kristina Azmi. "The risk of civil unrest is growing and with it the accompanying risk of military intervention."
"WE'LL BE BACK"
The PAD, led by a group of royalist businessmen, academics and activists, formally marked the end of the occupation by singing the king's anthem. Ominously, the PAD protesters vow to return if they see Thaksin allies getting near power again.
"I am sad that we are going," said Ranatip, 48, an unemployed office assistant. "But I am ready to fight for my king and my country. I will come back as soon as I am needed."
Even though Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat -- Thaksin's brother-in-law -- and several cabinet ministers were banned by Tuesday's court ruling, most MPs have survived and simply switched to a new "shell" party.
Parliamentary numbers suggest they have a comfortable majority, and acting Prime Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said parliament would convene on Dec. 8 to select a new prime minister, the third in as many months.
Cargo flights started to leave Suvarnabhumi on Tuesday but the occupation has dealt an enormous blow to tourism and the export sector, already reeling from the global economic crisis.
Weerasak Kowsurat, the outgoing minister for tourism in Somchai's government, estimated around 230,000 foreign tourists remained stranded, although a steady flow of planes had left from airports outside the capital.
"These tourists left stranded should not have to wait for the official reopening of the airport, which is probably going to take another week. At this point, I think, what's important is to get them home as soon as possible," he told Reuters.
STRUGGLING ECONOMY
Finance Minister Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech said this week the economy would struggle to grow at all next year.
The rate move, Thailand's first monetary easing since July 2007 and the biggest cut since the central bank adopted its inflation targeting regime in May 2000, brought the benchmark rate to its lowest in more than three years.
Some newspapers said Health Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who has not had to step down, could be elected prime minister next week, a controversial choice since he is a hardline former policeman detested by the PAD.
Repairing the damage to Thailand's "Land of Smiles" image and economy will take years, with the Association of Travel Agents predicting a fall of a million tourists in the November-March high season.
Some ministers have already said arrivals next year could drop as low as 6 million compared to a target this year of more than 14 million.
"A good image and a solid reputation take years to blossom. Sadly, it has been snatched away in the blink of an eye," the Bangkok Post said in an editorial.
"The notion of Thailand as the Land of Smiles is becoming obsolete. It is fast turning itself into a land of misery and strife."

MUMBAI, India – Commandos ended a siege of the luxury Oberoi hotel on Friday while other forces rappelled from helicopters to storm a besieged Jewish center, two days after a chain of militant attacks across India's financial center left at least 143 people dead and the city in panic.

While explosions and gunfire continued intermittently at the elegant Taj Mahal hotel Friday afternoon, officials said commandos had killed two gunmen inside the nearby Oberoi hotel and ended the attack there.

"The hotel is under our control," J.K. Dutt, director general of India's elite National Security Guard commando unit, told reporters, adding that 24 bodies had been found. Dozens of people — including a man clutching a baby — had been evacuated from Oberoi earlier Friday.

The airborne assault on the center run by the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch was punctuated by gunshots and explosions — and at one point an intense exchange of fire that lasted several minutes — as forces cleared it floor by floor, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene. By Friday afternoon, the commandos had control of the top two floors.

One camouflaged commando came out with a bandage on his forehead, while soldiers fired smoke grenades into the building and a steady stream of gunfire reverberated across narrow alleys.

Israel's ambassador to India, Mark Sofer, said they believed there were up to nine hostages inside. Their fate was not clear. Sofer denied reports that Israeli commandos were taking part in the operation.

More than 143 people were killed and 288 injured when suspected Islamic militants attacked 10 sites in Mumbai starting Wednesday evening.

Security officials said their operations were almost over.

"It's just a matter of a few hours that we'll be able to wrap up things," Lt. Gen. N. Thamburaj told reporters Friday morning.

The group rescued from the Oberoi, many holding passports, included at least two Americans, a Briton, two Japanese nationals and several Indians. Some carried luggage with Canadian flags. One man in a chef's uniform was holding a small baby. About 20 airline crew members were freed, including staff from Lufthansa and Air France.

"I'm going home, I'm going to see my wife," said Mark Abell, with a huge smile on his face after emerging from the hotel.

Abell, from Britain, had locked himself in his room during the siege. "These people here have been fantastic, the Indian authorities, the hotel staff. I think they are a great advertisement for their country," he said as security officials pulled him away.

The well-coordinated strikes by small bands of gunmen starting Wednesday night left the city shell-shocked.

Late Thursday, after about 400 people had been brought out of the Taj hotel, officials said it had been cleared of gunmen. But Friday morning, army commanders said that while three gunmen had been killed, two to three more were still inside with about 15 civilians.

A few hours after that, Thamburaj, the security official, said at least one gunman was still alive inside the hotel and had cut of electricity on the floor where he was hiding. Shortly after that announcement, another round of explosions and gunfire were heard coming from the hotel.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blamed "external forces" for the violence — a phrase sometimes used to refer to Pakistani militants, whom Indian authorities often blame for attacks.

On Friday, India's foreign minister ratcheted up the accusations over the attacks.

"According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in the western city of Jodhpur.

"Proof cannot be disclosed at this time," he said, adding that Pakistan had assured New Delhi it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against India. India has long accused Islamabad of allowing militant Muslim groups, particularly those fighting in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, to train and take shelter in Pakistan. Mukherjee's carefully phrased comments appeared to indicate he was accusing Pakistan-based groups of staging the attack, and not Pakistan itself.

Islamabad has long denied those accusations.

Earlier Friday, Pakistan's Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar, in Islamabad, denied involvement by his country: "I will say in very categoric terms that Pakistan is not involved in these gory incidents."

The gunmen were well-prepared, apparently scouting some targets ahead of time and carrying large bags of almonds to keep up their energy.

"It's obvious they were trained somewhere ... Not everyone can handle the AK series of weapons or throw grenades like that," an unidentified member of India's Marine Commando unit told reporters, his face wrapped in a black mask. He said the men were "very determined and remorseless."

A U.S. investigative team was heading to Mumbai, a State Department official said Thursday evening, speaking on condition of anonymity because the U.S. and Indian governments were still working out final details.

India has been shaken repeatedly by terror attacks blamed on Muslim militants in recent years, but most were bombings striking crowded places: markets, street corners, parks. Mumbai — one of the most populated cities in the world with some 18 million people — was hit by a series of bombings in July 2006 that killed 187 people.

These attacks were more sophisticated — and more brazen.

They began at about 9:20 p.m. with shooters spraying gunfire across the Chhatrapati Shivaji railroad station, one of the world's busiest terminals. For the next two hours, there was an attack roughly every 15 minutes — the Jewish center, a tourist restaurant, one hotel, then another, and two attacks on hospitals. There were 10 targets in all.

Indian media showed pictures of rubber dinghies found by the city's shoreline, apparently used by the gunmen to reach the area. Both the luxury hotels targeted overlook the Arabian Sea.

Analysts around the world were debating whether the gunmen could have been tied to — or inspired by — al-Qaida.

A previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility in e-mails to several media outlets. The Deccan is a region in southern India that was traditionally ruled by Muslim kings.

Survivors of the hotel attacks said the gunmen had specifically targeted Britons and Americans, though most of the dead seemed to be Indians and whoever else was caught in the random gunfire.

One of the gunmen "stopped once and asked, 'Where are you from? Any British or American? Show your ID," Alex Chamberlain, a British citizen dining at the Oberoi, told reporters.

Among the dead were two Australians and a Japanese, said the state home ministry. An Italian, a Briton and a German were also killed, according to their foreign ministries.

The United States, Pakistan and other countries condemned the attacks.

Relations between Hindus, who make up more than 80 percent of India's 1 billion population, and Muslims, who make up about 14 percent, have sporadically erupted into bouts of sectarian violence since British-ruled India was split into independent India and Pakistan in 1947.
